Earth — 2098

Daniel’s memories of Aedan Trask were hazy with fever. But he remembered the large cave that served as a general living area for these people; he remembered the fire and the men and women sitting around watching him from thin, underfed faces. And he remembered the healer, Meagan, and smiled when he caught her eye across the fire.

He understood better, now, why they lived below ground. Safe from Wraith eyes, yes, but perhaps their ancestors had retreated underground even before the Wraith had arrived, to escape the worst ravages of the war that had raged on the surface.

“Well,” Meagan said, picking her way through the crowd to stand before Daniel. “You’re more alive than I’d expected.”

“So I hear.”

She cocked her head, eyes narrowed. “I’d like to think it was my skill that healed you, but I doubt I can take the credit.”

Daniel was about to obfuscate when Meagan, much as Janet Fraiser might have done, reached out and pressed her hand against his side where the wound had been. When he didn’t wince, her eyes widened. “Impossible,” she said.

“Let’s just say we have a story to tell.”

Meagan grunted and looked over at Elspeth who was hovering nearby. “You’ll like that, girl,” Meagan said. “More stories.”

“True ones,” Elspeth said. “They’ve found Dix, and a way to escape this place.”

Meagan looked at Daniel for the truth.

“It’s not quite that simple,” he said, to both of them. “But it’s true, we have found Dix.”

Further into the room, Jack was talking with Aedan Trask—tall and lithe like the rest of his people, Trask had a face full of suspicion and very little hope. He was a cynic. Jack would have his work cut out if he wanted Aedan Trask’s help.

Perhaps Jack could feel Daniel’s eyes on his back, because at that moment he turned around and beckoned him over.

“Come on,” Daniel said to Elspeth, including Meagan in the invitation, “let’s go sit down and we’ll tell you what we know.”

They sat close to the fire on matting that covered the floor. Something was cooking; he could smell a meaty aroma of stew and tried not to let his stomach growl. Aedan kept his distance, Elspeth putting herself somewhere between Daniel and Trask, sitting on her heels and all but bouncing with excitement. In the firelight, her eyes gleamed and for a moment he was reminded of Sha’re, of her enthusiasm and beauty. He looked away with a frown and told himself it was only the light.

Jack gave a swift recount of their capture by the Wraith, their escape and their discovery of Dix and the buried Stargate.

“Then it’s close!” Elspeth looked ready to pack right there and then.

“No, I’m sorry, but it’s not,” Sam said. “When we were taken by the Wraith we were transported a great distance. Probably across an ocean.”

“Ah,” Aedan said with a skeptical twist of his lips. “Convenient.”

“Truth,” Jack said, matching him look for look.

“You just don’t want to believe,” Elspeth snapped. “You don’t want anything to change, to get better.
